11 June 03
To all I.P.'s:
On June 9th at approximately 2300, an all day. on-going 6M band opening via sporadic Es suddenly intensified, with lots of short skip & very strong signals in the normal single hop range, 1100-1300 mi. TV signals were such that local TV3 was being severely interfered with, & TV4 was a P5 quality color picture. Above that, I didn't see other TV DX. FM reception here in Las Vegas is cross-modulation restricted.
At 2319, I heard my first signal, W5HOT(ex WA5NOB)in grid EM25, AR with S9 signals on SSB. Shortly after, there was pandemonium on 144.200. My tally was 11 total W5 land QSO's, in AR,LA,OK & TX, in 8 different grid squares. Distances varied between 1100-1360 mi. The apparent Es cloud seemed centered over grid DM83, on the NM-TX border. Near the end of the opening around 2342, while on CW on 144.215, I was heard by KU4WW in
grid EM54, W. AL, almost at double hop range. The last signals I heard were 2 stations ragchewing on 144.220 at 0031 on 10 June.
Thruout this opening, I appealed for 222 stations, but apparently none were available in the areas where my particular opening occurred. Signals were strong enough in my opinion to support 222 propagation to E. OK & W. AR. Too bad!
My thanks to those stations who were alert & responded to this relatively rare incidence & special thanks to those who moved off 144.200 when it was appropriate, usually by announcement.
