Electron Coupled Oscillator - the term was often used for a VFO or crystal 
oscillator which used a pentode in which the screen was actually the plate of 
the oscillator and the electron stream coupled that to the plate circuit.

Essentially made an oscillator and an amplifier in one tube.

ECOs were usually more stable than straight oscillators.
