All the GK 500 160-15M tank coils supplied by WRL were phenolic, regardless
of model.

The C model was made both by WRL and Globe Electronics.

The Globe Electronics version may have had a ceramic form..memory fails, but
I could check the photos of my old rig if anybody really cares that much.

In 1998 I rebuilt a Globe King 500-C, which had the golden screw driver
treatment, and I used a fluted type ceramic coil to build a new tank coil.

A properly operating ( and operated ! ) GK-500 will positively not overheat
it's phenolic tank coil. But, various awful events that cause excessive
plate current to be drawn can make this happen.

Blame the antenna or the operator.

I have the correct dimensions and tap positions if anybody needs to build a
proper tank coil.

Also... using an antenna noise bridge ( such as a palomar) with the antenna
relay closed and all power OFF... allows you to optimize taps. However if
you follow the original recipe... it works fine.
