Weather Update – A
powerful line of severe storms rolled across southern Wisconsin during the
late evening and early morning hours of June 16-17, 2014.   For the
most part, the line generated strong, straight-lined wind and heavy
rain. The National Weather Service radar indicated a pronounced rotation
over northern Lafayette and southern Iowa counties around 11pm.
Meteorologist believe it was at this point a tornado may have
first touched down in the Mineral Point area, lifted and touched down
multiple times between New Glarus and Verona which likely lasted from 12:05am
to 12:13am.  Crews from the National Weather Service are in those areas
today to do a storm survey and confirm the tornado.
Storm Damage – Here is a summary of the damage.
Platteville: Five people were injured by flying glass when
the storm blew out windows in homes around Platteville. One victim was taken

Verona: At least 19 homes are damaged and uninhabitable with
150 other homes suffering minor damage. There’s also extensive damage
to Country View Elementary where a wall partially collapsed. The Salvation
Army established an emergency shelter at Memorial Baptist Church. Three
families are currently using that shelter. The Red Cross assisted two other
families with housing and other emergency needs.
