Hello again from Green Bay!
After 2 months of planning and negotiating and three days of meetings this
week alone, we finally got permission to release the details of the 2014
marathon routes! For the first time, the distance events will start at
different times on Sunday, May 18th and take separate routes before uniting
for the final lap around Lambeau Field.
The full marathon will start at 7 a.m. and the half marathon will start an
hour later at 8 a.m. and run a similar route as last year. Both will take
off from Lombardi Ave.
The full marathon will include a route south toward De Pere, a lap around
south De Pere, back up the Fox River Trail, east to the historic "City
Stadium" (including a lap inside), heading back through downtown past WBAY-TV
and City Hall, up along the Fox River's "City Deck", across the "Ray
Nitschke Memorial Bridge", past Titletown Brewery, south down Broadway and
then back toward Lambeau Field with a final lap inside the stadium.
(Anybody see a theme developing here?)
As two separate events, the courses will span nearly 40 miles. Last year
the Finish Line and Main Medical Tent were located on the southeast corner
of the stadium parking lot. This year, everything will be located on the
west side of the stadium, with Incident Command, Medical, Net Control and
the FINISH line at the southeast corner of the stadium parking lot.
These changes make this marathon unique in that it's the first time any
marathon has run laps inside two historic NFL stadiums. It will be
following a path of "Packer" history. Celebrating the Cellcom Marathon's
15th year!
This is why we still need volunteers. It will require at least 60 radio
operators to support the marathon in 2014. Currently we at at 50%. Please
talk it up at your clubs and with your friends. A Tech license and a 2
meter HT is the minimum requirement.
The courses do not overlap anywhere except the final lap inside
LambeauField (which, by the way, there will be a Med Station inside
the bowl and
some lucky radio operators will be stationed!). Med Stations will be
approximately 1.5 miles apart along both marathons. Each station will be
staffed with a EMT, an Athletic Trainer and at least one radio operator on
the first half of the courses and two on the second half of both courses.
If we have enough volunteers we will station two operators at each station.
There will be 6 Medical Vans and 2 Shuttle Buses with APRS trackers in them
(probably 4 med vans on the full and 2 on the half, with a shuttle on each
course). This will allow us to see where every vehicle is on the course at
any given time.
We will be operating the courses independently, each with it's own Net
Control Operators, Repeater Frequencies and Dispatchers for transportation.
You can check out the basic course routes on the links below.
The details for the medical stations and other details are still being
plotted on the courses. As soon as I finish the first plot, I will put
links to the Google Earth maps we will use on this website so you can
download them or view them. Keep in mind, as always, there are constant
changes (mostly minor). I will put links to the maps we will use on this
website so you can download them or view them.
Please make sure that your information is correct on
this<http://groupspaces.com/Cellcom-Marathon-ARES/>website. ANYONE
wishing to volunteer, MUST sign up
here <http://groupspaces.com/Cellcom-Marathon-ARES/> first!
IF YOU REQUIRE A ROOM, YOU MUST INDICATE ON THE SIGNUP AS SOON AS POSSIBLE.
Cellcom is providing the rooms at no cost!
Rooms are for "hams" volunteering for the event only. They are
double-occupancy (2 Queen beds in each room), in other words, you'll be
sharing a room with a fellow ham! Another good reason to talk a "ham"
friend in to coming with you.
We are still planning on having vests available for the course volunteers
to use. As, we finalize plans, I will post updates here and on our website.
As always, if you have questions, email or call me. For new volunteers, we
will pair you up with someone experienced, so don't worry. This is a great
way to meet new hams, have a good time and put your radios to good use. Ask
anyone that worked the marathon last year. We all had a great time!
