Subject: SKYWARN: Tornado Drill At 1PM Today
OVERVIEW:
Governor Scott Walker has proclaimed April 21-25th as
Tornado and Severe Weather
Awareness Week in the Badger state. Wisconsin
Emergency Management, the Wisconsin
Broadcasters Association, and
the National Weather Service (NWS) offices that serve
Wisconsin are
participating in this campaign.
TODAY'S DRILL:
At 1:00PM the
NWS will issue a statewide mock Tornado Watch. Then at 1:45PM
a statewide
mock Tornado Warning will be issued. The mock
watch/warning will end at 2:00PM. Many radio
and TV stations will
participate, the NOAA Weather Radios will sound the alert tone, and
many
communities will activate their outdoor warning
sirens. Remember sirens are only for people
outdoors.
Minnesota and Wisconsin will conduct the drill at the same time with
Minnesota
having a second drill at 6:55PM. Smartphones should not
respond to this drill.
CURRENT WEATHER:
Many areas of the
state will have cloudy or even dark skies. This may confuse a some
people.
There may be a few rumbles of thunder, rain, or wintery mix,
however no severe weather is
anticipated.
PURPOSE:
This tornado drill is the ideal time to test your ability to:
1. Receive weather watches and warnings,
2. Disseminate
the message,
3. Activate your safety and shelter plans,
4. Find weaknesses in those plans or determine why you did
not receive the alert.
Do this for your home, work, school, or large
venue locations.
