June 23-29th is National Lightning Safety Awareness Week.
Because of its completely unpredictable nature it strikes without warning killing on average
54 people each year. During a given year the odds of you being struck are around 1 in
775,000. During a average 80 year life span the odds are about 1 in 80,000. However,
the odds of you being affected by someone that was struck are about 1 in 1,000. The
average home related lightning damage insurance claim is over 5000 dollars.
We have composed a graphic at http://www.mke-skywarn.org/lightningsafe2013.htm
that lists our goto lightning related links. This includes the NOAA campaign site, our own
selected list of links and YouTube lightning strike videos.
One of the most comprehensive sites (42 pages) that covers lightning's mythology, history,
meteorology, science, medical affects/treatments, electrical principles, and societal impacts
is at http://www.uic.edu/labs/lightninginjury/LtnInjuries.pdf . It is co-written by longtime
Milwaukee Skywarn friend Dr. Mary Ann Cooper, a nationally recognized lightning injury
expert and (retired) emergency room doctor.
