Subject: SKYWARN: Storm Spotter Training Schedules

2011 storm spotter training programs for most areas of Wisconsin will begin
during the
first or second weeks of March. These programs continue until about late April
or early May.
Local schedules are on NWS websites and a state wide list is on this Milwaukee
Skywarn
page: http://www.mke-skywarn.org/schedule.htm

Because Doppler radar is designed to look only into the heart of storm clouds it
can not see
whats happening at ground level. But with the help of trained storm spotters,
ground-truth
information now becomes available as they provide the National Weather Service
with

many additional sets of eyes and ears, thus improving the accuracy of weather
warnings.

Unless indicated these programs are usually free and open to the public. You do
not
have to be a spotter to attend, but everyone is encouraged to take the annual
refresher and learn about the latest changes. Most people can recognize a
tornado,

but can you recognize the cloud features that develop before the tornado?

The (BASIC) programs last about 2 hours, usually include a short break period,
and are
designed for the beginner. For those seeking higher levels of training there are
also several
ADVANCED programs on the schedules.

Based upon "hits" to the Spotter Schedule page of our website, interest in
spotter training

is running much higher then last year. Come early for a good seat and bring a
pen and pad

for note taking.
