Licensed Ham Radio Operators needed for EmComm exercise June 8-9, 2007
No experience necessary!
The 2007 Great Midwest Relay Race will be held Friday/Saturday, June
8th/9th.
This is a unique team running event where runners who normally compete
individually against the clock, compete as part of a team competition, so
dependence on your team mates becomes an important factor. This event starts
in Madison, WI on Friday morning, June 8th, and operates continuously to the
finish line at Montrose Harbor in Chicago, IL sometime mid-day on Saturday,
June 9th.
The GMR Comm Team was formed from hams throughout Wisconsin and Illinois. We
provide end-to-end communication coverage using voice and digital
technology. This gives the GMR event staff unparalleled capabilities unlike
any other similar event.
We treat this as two day, two state emergency communication exercise, and
from it has spawned a new way to provide near real-time severe weather
advisories throughout the entire network, and the ability to pass long haul
digital (tabular) traffic between eight counties.
As a way of giving back to the numerous volunteers, the event staff has
created the GMR Scholarship. This is a tuition reimbursement for those that
want to enroll in the ARRL EmComm Level I, II, and III courses. Upon
completion of your course, you will receive a check for $45, which is the
ARRL member rate. There are scholarship opportunities waiting for you! To
enroll, go to: http://www.races.org/Scholarship.htm
There are several key positions still available; from remote field sites,
where you can exercise your go-kit and portable antenna/power supply; to
various duties within the net control positions in Madison, & Milwaukee, WI,
and Libertyville, IL.
