From nr9q at hotmail.com Fri Aug 2 17:24:49 2019 From: nr9q at hotmail.com (Chris Schulz) Date: Fri, 2 Aug 2019 21:24:49 +0000 Subject: [WIARC] C4FM national simplex frequency References: Message-ID: WIARC members, I would like to pass along some information that was sent to me. I have been running the Yaesu FTM-400 VHF/UHF recently and had the question of what is the national call frequency for CF4M (Fusion) was going to be. Ron (AA9GL) asked or found a post from John Kruk (Yaesu sales representative). John stated ?The frequency of 145.5625 was suggested to use as it works in ALL band plans worldwide. It will catch on if people continue monitor it and use it. I have my wide area node at home on it. People have started to use it but as stated it just takes time. I actually talked to a few people on it while traveling through the midwest/Chicago at the start of the month.? Not sure how many people in the local area have these radios with C4FM capability at the moment. The FTM-400 is a very nice and easy to use radio. Easy to program from the control head, with nice APRS features. I have really enjoyed seeing the decoded APRS beacon flash across the screen while mobile (I would not let this distract me while in motion though). You can review everything you received later on what is called the S.list. Decoded an APRS message from another station while mobile on a quarter wave 2m antenna a couple of days ago at almost 350 miles. The topic of the APRS features in this radio could be a topic all on its own. I do want to add though, there are numerous igate and digipeaters popping up in the area with more to follow. I just like to see when the band it stretching out and the messages people send with there beacons. Danny (NG9R) put out a nice article in the newsletter on our ability to link to many more hams throughout Illinois and farther. If you have any further questions on this topic and want to know more on how to get started in C4FM, any of us that use this mode would be willing to help. There is a net on the Illinois-Link on Thursday?s and now it was said there will now be an ARES net on the first and third Sunday of each month at 4:30pm. Look forward to seeing anyone that can make it to the meeting next Wednesday evening. 73 for now. Radios and antennas began arriving last week, and a tower and beam will be erected, along with several vertical antennas. WW0WWV will be set up adjacent to the WWV transmitter site in Fort Collins, Colorado. WWV turns 100 years old on October 1. "We'll be testing band and notch filtering, in an attempt to reign in the extreme RF environment created by WWV and WWVB," said Dave Swartz, W0DAS, of the Northern Colorado Amateur Radio Club (NCARC). The club will carry out the special event operation in conjunction with the WWV Amateur Radio Club and the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), which operates WWV/WWVH/WWVB. The special event site is within 1/3 of a mile of all six WWV transmitters and the 50 kW WWVB transmitter. "On-air tests will start Saturday afternoon, August 24, and run through Sunday, August 25," Swartz said, adding that organizers will post specific times and frequencies on the WWV Centennial Committee website. The WWV Centennial special event is set to run from September 28 through October 2, and round-the-clock operation will take place on CW, SSB, and digital modes. Operations will shift among HF bands following typical propagation and will include 160 meters as well as satellites (SO-50, AO-91, and AO-92) and 6-meter meteor scatter. Up to four stations will be on the air for routine operations. A fifth station will schedule contacts with schools, universities, and museums, as well as conducting unscheduled contacts. The additional station will periodically broadcast an AM carrier from a radio locked with WWV's 10 MHz signal. "At this point we have filled our operator's slots and met equipment goals, but we need more financial resources to cover basic operating expenses, return shipping, and site logistics," Swartz said. Members of the Amateur Radio industry have contributed equipment, including radios, amplifiers, and antennas. NIST has announced that it will not be able to open the doors of WWV to the public for the event. "Due to a number of reasons, the scope of the formal celebration will be limited to only 100 invited participants," the WWV Centennial Committee announced. "WW0WWV will be the main public event for the centennial celebration." Visit the WWV Centennial Committee website at http://wwv100.com/ to see how you can get involved. It runs noon to midnight on Saturday, 80-10 meters, phone & CW, but no digital. Especially from EPA, Ohio ought to be in a good skip zone on 40 meters for much of the day. With that same skip zone, 80/75 gets some Ohio activity during the day, so don't hesitate to listen there as well. Please keep 3545, +/- half a KHz or so, clear for the mobile stations. That way one can monitor there and if there is activity, it will quite likely be with a mobile, often in a new and possibly rare county. Interesting factoid: Ohio has 21 counties that share names with Pennsylvania counties: Adams, Butler, Clinton, Crawford, Delaware, Erie, Fayette, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Jefferson, Lawrence, Mercer, Monroe, Montgomery, Perry, Pike, Union, Warren, Washington, and Wayne. Subtract that from Ohio's 88 counties and you get --- 67 ! ---. Full rules, planned operations, etc., are at the Ohio QSO Party website, www.ohqp.org. I'll be out mobile (and hope to be out in PA in October as well), and hope to hear and work lots of Pennsylvania folks! 73 - Jim K8MR From dpease at adams.net Sun Aug 25 09:10:26 2019 From: dpease at adams.net (Danny Pease) Date: Sun, 25 Aug 2019 08:10:26 -0500 Subject: [WIARC] September newsletter Message-ID: <013101d55b46$7693e560$63bbb020$@adams.net> The September issue of the Western Illinois ARC is available for viewing.
