Dave (WA9GBC) has the parts and understands what has been going wrong with the beam. Message-ID: <95fc5afa-44cf-7c02-8531-f09fd97e09c8@comcast.net> Last Wed a group of W9AWE club members met at the Red Cross to work on the Tri-Band Beam.? The team brought the beam down from the tower and re-furbished all the plastic parts they could.? (A new balun was also installed.) ? We did find a loose connection on the beam itself.? The beam was then re-installed and the flex jumper feeding the beam was also replaced. Last Trursday I got a quick check on the beam completed with the following results.... 20 Meters? Low end CW region less than 2.0 SWR...? PH area SWR about 1.1 15 Meters Low end CW region less than 2.0 SWR... PH area SWR about 1.1 10 Meters Low end CW region less than 2.0 SWR... PH area SWR about 1.1 The beam was rotated to East and West with no problems. The beam was then rotated through East to South with no problems. The beam was then rotated through West to South with no problems. The latter rotation produced the tightest tension of the feeder line with the coax bending over the North side to the top tower section. Pictures should be available at next meeting.? Thanks to all who helped make this a success.? Dave WA9GBC. I'll bet 10% of the contacts try to bust that. Mostly "Whiskey Alpha Echo". Long live CW... Of course, after all the busts of the club call in ILQP....never mind.... -----Original Message----- From: wiarc-bounces at mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of ROBERT CRESWICK Sent: Friday, April 26, 2019 3:26 PM To: Danny Pease ; WIARC at mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [WIARC] Western Illinois ARC newsletter To unsubscribe or make changes to your personal setting for the WIARC list, please go to http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/wiarc I suppose we could start a project/research to see how many different phonetics were used for this call... By May of 1950 I had been in Quincy about a year. Enough to find work at Motorola where a bunch of "real hams" and assorted "wanna-bes" also worked, plus membership In the Western Illinois Radio Club. Not owning a car yet I chose to listen to 75 meter field day activity on a newly acquired Hallicrafters S-38. I remember hearing QSOs from the club site in Baldwin Park. The op that Sunday morning had a Q5 grade voice the cut thru the noise, except for the "W" sound. It came out like the sound of a strangled bull frog. Calling CQ he frequently repeated the call sign W 9 W W O. (He also had quite a time phonetically spelling Baldwin copied as Melvin, then Belvin and having it understood.) About the same time I recall club meeting discussions about getting a license in the club's name. The club members had just completed a rather impressively powered AM HF Band transmitter for members use, located at Central Fire Station. A huge thing in a at least a six foot high, 19 inch wide rack cabinet. There seemed to be some legal/technical licensing problem in that but work was under way. The station custodian may have been using his personal call W9WW0 circa 1950 and 1951. Fast forward through the Korean War and my return to Quincy as an EX-GI. I noted the new license had been obtained and W9AWE was in use. In those days I drove by the Bell Telephone building at Sixth & Broadway, regularly noting Gold amateur radio call letters on the back window of a late model car: "W9OAB" and wondered "Who is that". At the next field day I would meet him and witness his skill at throwing a rock weight and leader rope over a high tree limb for an antenna anchor; a respected skill no doubt learned in youth as a telephone lineman. 30. 73, W9PQD, Olin -----Original Message----- From: wiarc-bounces at mailman.qth.net On Behalf Of ROBERT CRESWICK Sent: Friday, April 26, 2019 3:26 PM To: Danny Pease ; WIARC at mailman.qth.net Subject: Re: [WIARC] Western Illinois ARC newsletter To unsubscribe or make changes to your personal setting for the WIARC list, please go to http://mailman.qth.net/mailman/listinfo/wiarc I suppose we could start a project/research to see how many different phonetics were used for this call... Message-ID: <6ACF1915-F1C2-44AC-A2C1-F93D8BC2D20A@gmail.com> 1. Next weekend's QSO Parties and N1MM logger May 4/5 is The Big Weekend for QSO parties: Indiana, New England, 7QP, and Delaware - all on the same weekend. They don't all have the same start or end times but there will be activity from 13Z on the 4th to 2359Z on the 5th. And if you use N1MM+ for logging, no matter where you are, you can run all four at the same time in the same log. This only works for this weekend set of contests!!! Here's how. Start a new log, pick QSOParty. If you are inside one of the four, select your party from the drop-down list. If you are anywhere else, select IN7QNE as the "state". These parties permit county line operation. So when you enter an exchange like IDWAS/ORMAL N1MM turns it into two log lines for proper scoring.? Remember that each time a mobile enters a new county he is considered a new station. This is another reason to copy their whole exchange. Each of these five "state" choices use the same multiplier list so when you receive an exchange like WORMA from New England, ORDES from 7QP, INMAD from Indiana, or KDE from Delaware, N1MM gives you the proper multiplier credit. That is, you get an MA credit as a 7QP participant and the guy in MA gets his Oregon credit. The beauty of all this comes at the end of the weekend. Simply send your Cabrillo file to all four of the sponsors. They will score your log and disregard any non-counting contacts. Taken together, it makes this the largest QSO party weekend. Who says the bands are dead? Get out there and have fun. 73, -- Dick Frey, K4XU ...N7XU/m in 7QP
