See how good your HT is and what kind of a counterpoise you make for your HT -- does size matter :-) ?? We'll be doing nifty certificate awards for each competition class. #1 Stock - this is based on the honor system that the radio you use is as-purchased from the dealer. #2 Stock modified - still using a non-directional antenna but can be after-market #3 Open - do what you want. Pringle antenna, yagi, or whatever floats your boat. What we'll be doing.. There will be a spot where you will stand out in front of the Red Cross building on the SW corner. The target receiver is 4.5 miles ESE to a Diamond antenna in my attic. You'll transmit with the radio in "speaking mode" for at least 7 seconds continuous and you have to be able to speak into whatever microphone you have. You may hold the radio however you desire as long as the microphone is usable. You will not be told what your signal level is since you normally would never know. My computer at home is monitoring the signal level from an ICOM 706MKIIG with some software I wrote. I tested it with my Baofeng GT-3 and the stock antenna and got this result, first measurement here is the immediate signal level , 2nd on is a moving 5-second average (why you need >7 seconds alowoing for first and last signals to be partials). 12:05:33, -60, -60.0 12:05:34, -49, -57.8 12:05:35, -48, -55.4 12:05:36, -49, -53.2 12:05:37, -48, -50.8 12:05:38, -49, -48.6 12:05:39, -50, -48.8 12:05:40, -49, -49.0 12:05:41, -49, -49.0 12:05:42, -50, -49.4 12:05:44, -50, -49.6 12:05:45, -49, -49.4 12:05:46, -60, -51.6 12:05:47, -60, -53.8 12:05:48, -60, -55.8 12:05:49, -60, -57.8 12:05:50, -60, -60.0 We'll take the highest reading which, in this case, was -48.6dB. I also ran this test replacing the stock antenna (which is a Baofeng A-V85) with a Harvest RH660S (which would be a stock modified competitor) and got this result: 12:06:18, -60, -60.0 12:06:19, -21, -52.2 12:06:20, -27, -45.6 12:06:21, -25, -38.6 12:06:22, -25, -31.6 12:06:23, -26, -24.8 12:06:24, -26, -25.8 12:06:25, -27, -25.8 12:06:26, -25, -25.8 12:06:27, -27, -26.2 12:06:28, -27, -26.4 12:06:29, -28, -26.8 12:06:30, -60, -33.4 12:06:31, -60, -40.4 12:06:32, -60, -47.0 12:06:33, -60, -53.6 12:06:35, -60, -60.0 You can see the highest result here is -24.8dB or 23.8dB higher than the A-V85 antenna. Anyone that that is available and wants to help, plan on being at the Red Cross this coming Saturday June 14. We have several things we will want to work on or at least plan to get done later, part of which is what antennas we will be using for Field Day and a way to network all the logging computers together. We will start at 9:00 AM if not earlier. If that day does not work for everyone, I am open to other days as well. I am in need of 6 or 7 hams to help with this years Running Raider Classic. This is a 10k run and 5k walk run that is located in South and Indian Mounds Park. It is like the bridge the gap but on a much smaller scale. It starts and finishes on Jackson Street in front of Quincy Notre Dame High School. Proceeds of the event go to fund the Student's Cross Country Team, both boys and girls, and the boys Wrestling Team. The date is June 27th and It starts at 7:30am so we will need to be in positions by 7:15am and we will be done by 10:00am at the latest, with most Hams done much sooner so it should not interfere with Field Day too much. We will be using the 147.360 + 600 portable repeater. If you don't have a 2 meter radio I am sure we can round one up to loan to you for the event. PLUS !!!!! You get a free Tee Shirt!!!!!! I will even autograph it for you if you want :-) If you can help please contact me at: mmccabe at illinoissignal.com or call me at 217-242-6368 Thanks Mike McCabe From dpease at adams.net Tue Jun 16 15:15:27 2015 From: dpease at adams.net (Danny Pease) Date: Tue, 16 Jun 2015 14:15:27 -0500 Subject: [WIARC] Yaesu System Fusion Webinar Message-ID: <01a001d0a868$cd9518b0$68bf4a10$@adams.net> Gigaparts is hosting a Yaesu System Fusion Webinar this evening starting at 7:30 PM. Message-ID: _*Field Day 2015 *_ Field Day is finally here again! This year it falls on Saturday, June 27th - Sunday, June 28th. The club is going to hold the event in the same place we have the past several years, located on North 23rd street in the American Red Cross building. Anyone planning to help with the setup can show up around 9am local Saturday morning to help with setup. Field Day operating begins at 1pm local (1800Z). The club will be operating club callsign W9AWE. Our planned category for the event will be 2F or 3F for the event. There are plans to have three stations on the air, operating three modes. One for CW, SSB and digital. Connor (KC9ZJI) is planning on bringing his ANAN 100 SDR for the Digital station. If you have been thinking about an SDR radio and would like to know more about them. This would be a good time to try one out on the air. I am sure Connor would love to answer any questions you might have about SDR radio. Dinner will be at 6pm local. This will be a great time to enjoy some good food and visit with friends. For the dinner, the meat utensils and drinks will be provided by the club. Please bring a carry in dish to share with members, friends and family of the club. If you have not seen the club radio room in awhile, you should give it a look. A lot of members have put in numerous volunteer hours to make the station what it is now. After dinner, please hang around and make some contacts on the bands. I am sure we will be in need of CW and overnight operators for Field Day. Hope we have some night owls in the group. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at Field Day this year. Getting on the air and hearing all the Field Day chatter is always exciting. This is for Connor to wire up to his ANAN radio. From what I understand, this could be just the plug that can be soldered to a cable he has. Or a plug that has a cable on it already. A salvage from another project perhaps. Connor would appreciate it if someone could find one laying in their pile of parts.
