Dear fellow members of the Monongalia Wireless Association:

Thanksgiving gives us an opportunity to gather with friends and family – to
enjoy each other’s company, over a memorable meal. It gives us a reason to
pause and reflect on the many people and things we have in our lives. For
over 45 years, amateur radio has been a part of what I have given thanks
for. It has brought me an incredible amount of enjoyment, as well as a
wide variety of acquaintances and friends – many of which I have never met
in person.

As president of the Monongalia Wireless Association, I wish to thank each
of you for your membership and participation in this amateur radio club. When
Debbie and I visited one of the meetings in 2015, we could see there was
something special about the group, starting as soon as we were greeted. Well
before that meeting was over, we knew we wanted to join.

MWA is a vibrant and progressive collection of radio amateurs. At each of
our meetings much is discussed about the various communications assets we
are fortunate enough to have and an expanding list of public service events
that we support. In addition, there are many ARRL WV section leaders among
our members, further demonstrating the leadership that MWA represents –
both individually and corporately. That leadership does not require an
extremely formal structure, rather it is a part of each of us as we listen
to the concerns of fellow hams and try to address any questions with
insightful and helpful answers. This happens so naturally within our ranks
that you might never really notice it – or the value of your assistance –
as it happens.

Perhaps most importantly, the environment at our meetings is one of mutual
respect. While there are times we may disagree about a topic of
conversation or an approach being used to address a situation, our members
make good use of civil discourse – without resorting to loud voices,
emotional outbursts or derogatory name-calling. Having traveled around
North America in recent years to various amateur radio club meetings,
hamfests, and conventions – I know how important that is and have seen far
too many clubs where this is unfortunately not the case.

With all of this in mind, thank you all for allowing me to serve you as
president this year and through 2020. Let us continue to work together,
continue the positive things we do, and discover ways to make our
organization even better.
