Bill,
The loss of Mike Palmer is sad news indeed.
I was getting back on the air as a ham radio operator after many years of inactivity. It was K8LG who helped that happen. Mike patiently spent time with me making sure that I knew the ropes again as many things had changed in the hobby since I had last been active. He provided me with equipment, knowledge and guidance.
I still have the Motorola Syntor X transceiver that Mike modified and tuned for two-meters, the Diamond vertical antenna and the 150 feet of RG8/X Coax that he sold me--all at more than reasonable cost. The Syntor X still works perfectly, the Diamond vertical is my primary antenna on two-meters and 70 cm and the RG8X still feeds my 40-meter dipole. But Mike's advice, his help and his friendly "sure, come on over" was worth even more.
Mike was a ham's ham. A true experimenter and a good friend. He will be very much missed.
73,
Jeff, WB1AAL

His family knew he meant a lot to the local ham community and I think it would be nice to share with them how many of us were mentored by Mike. Those who have already responded are already included.
