Hello everyone,
I have received several responses to this "feeler" email over the past
several days. So with that in mind I plan on holding the first session of
what I have decided to call the "North Central West Virginia 2 meter SSB
net" at 8:30 PM on the second Monday of December which (as Bob Steel was
kind enough to point out) is Monday December 14th 2015.
Also based on feed back from Carl Werntz, since most of the 2 meter
activity in the area takes place through FM repeaters and FM repeaters use
vertically polarized antennas during this net we will first call for
check-ins from anyone using vertically polarized antennas. Then since most
(all?) serious VHF weak signal activity occurs using horizontally polarized
antennas after a brief pause for me to change antennas I will ask for
check-ins again from anyone using horizontally polarized antennas.
This will give anyone who would like to participate an opportunity to do so
and maybe even a chance at some longer distance contacts.
I am still working on the exact preamble for the net but will share a link
to it once I have something that seems good enough to share.
As part of this activity I would like to include the exchange of maidenhead
grid squares (http://www.arrl.org/grid-squares). If you do not know your
grid square there are several free or cheap iphone/andriod apps that can
provide this information. I have used both the "Ham locator" and (while
not its primary function) the "repeater book" iphone app to get this
information. Some handheld GPS units are also able to provide this
information and I also found the follwoing website that can calculate this
for you as well:

Please let me know if you have any questions or other feedback.
Thanks and 73,
Josh
