Actress Hedy Lamarr was a partner in a patent for remotely control torpedos.

During WWII the US Government was collecting ideas from inventors that might be useful in war effort.

Musician George Antheil had been working on a way to control musical instruments using a piano roll or punched tape.

Lamarr and Antheil considered applying multi-frequency signals as a method to controlling weapons systems 
(such as a torpedo) so that the control signal would be harder to jam.
