Carl,

You are correct about the antenna cross polarization loss. It runs around 20 db and that represents quite substantial signal loss. 

I can do either horizontal or vertical polarization using either a 2-meter dipole that I built or a 2-meter vertical. However, I have no issues with our SSB Net starting out with vertically polarized antennas since most folks use vertical antennas for FM.
