Today I attended a lunch meeting at the Sheraton motel sponsored by Boscov’s Department Store.
Over 300 people representing 168 charitable organizations attended. The Radio Association of Erie was asked to attend.
“Boscov’s Department Store was founded by Solomon "Sol" Boscov of Jewish<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Judaism> descent., He immigrated to Reading, Pennsylvania<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reading,_Pennsylvania> in 1902 from Russia.[2]<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boscov%27s#cite_note-Berksiana._Charles_Schuyler_Castner_1976._Page_321-2> He had $1.37 in cash on arrival in the United States.[2]<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Boscov%27s#cite_note-Berksiana._Charles_Schuyler_Castner_1976._Page_321-2> He worked as a traveling salesman with an initial $8 worth of merchandise. Because he spoke Yiddish<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yiddish>, he was able to converse with those people in Berks County<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berks_County> who spoke Pennsylvania Dutch<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pennsylvania_German_language>. Solomon's fortunes changed in 1911 when he opened the first Boscov's store in Reading<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reading,_PA> to much fanfare. With growing notoriety, Boscov's began expanding in the Pennsylvania suburbs through the 1960s. As early as 1968, Boscov's had five stores, 2,200 workers, and annual sales exceeding $50 million. Solomon Boscov retired and was succeeded by his son Albert "Albie" Boscov<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Albert_Boscov> as head of the company in 1960.” From Wikipedia.
Boscov’s core values are honest pricing, buying goods at the source, and seeing vendors weekly. The store will boast a candy department, a toy department and a significant “big and tall” department amongst others. Boscov’s wants to make shopping at their store fun. They plan on having 300 local people employed to provide customer service.
Boscov’s is now opening a store in the Millcreek Mall where Sears used to be.
They will open a beautiful store this October. Based on past experience they know that there will be a great deal of curiosity surrounding the store opening generated by a strong advertising campaign. They want to use this excitement as a force for good; to benefit many worthy non-profit organizations in Erie County by offering a Gala Preview For A Great Cause.
This event will take place Thursday, October 5, 2017 from 10 AM to 9 PM
They ask that the RAE will sell $5 admission tickets for Boscov’s Gala Preview for a Great Cause. The RAE will keep the entire $5 for each ticket sold. Advance sales will be encouraged and promoted by Boscov’s.
There are many questions I can answer, but not in this email. If you need more information give me a call.
