[W3GV] D-Star Repeater

I personally don’t think DStar is a great idea for at least a couple reasons:
1) It’s not inexpensive.
2) It’s not interoperable. DStar only talks to DSTar, and that means Icom. No one else makes DStar radios. While there are some projects to create free and open source DStar gateways and repeaters, end users still need DStar radios to communicate with those, and that still ultimately means Icom. Tying your communications to one radio manufacturer and a “standard” that is not interoperable with anything else really doesn’t seem like a good way to handle emergency comms.
3) It’s proprietary. It strikes me that proprietary and for all intents and purposes closed “standards” run counter to the basis and purpose of amateur radio, but that’s just one man’s opinion. While it’s true that the standard is supposed to be open and supposed to have been spearheaded by the JARL, its availability from only one manufacturer, along with how exclusive some of the DStar reflector owners appear to be, seems to negate any openness the standard may have had.

>> We have received an Email from John Szwarc N3SPW regarding the subject. He is into D-star and would like to know if there is any interest here in Erie. He would help set up a D-star repeater so we could join in Western PA/Eastern Ohio nets as well as any emergencies and SET's that are periodically conducted. Bob N3IAX has D-star capabilities and was able to act as liaison between HF/2M nets here in Erie and the folks down state during the last SET.
>> I would like to know if we have any interest or any comments regarding D-star here in Erie. If so please let me know. There is a possibility that the 440 repeater at the clubhouse could be converted to D-star.
