Dear friends in Northern New Jersey -
As you know, I am running for Director of the ARRL Hudson Division. Ballots will be in your mailbox very soon, likely this week, and it is crucial that I receive your vote. Please mark and mail back your ballot as soon as possible.
You have heard me at NNJ club meetings, as far as Bergen, Sussex and Monmouth counties. I have tried to meet with as many clubs as possible but sometimes scheduling made that impractical.
You have seen my plan and future vision. It is all on my website at https://hudson.n2rj.com.
My opponent and his surrogates complain about supposed "negative campaigning," and call my campaign “mud-slinging.” I suggest you talk with attendees at the meetings where I have spoken. Ask them about the content and tone of my remarks. It's a great feeling to leave meetings with thunderous applause, many shaken hands, smiles, thanks and pledges of support. I am so grateful for all of this and for the many "likes", retweets and follow-up positive comments to my social media postings. I am proud to have attracted support from all over the Division and backing from so many clubs, especially here in Northern New Jersey.
My opponent claims that I oppose the compromised Amateur Radio Parity Act because I already have a 75 foot tower and that I am somehow an elitist because I am a contester and DXer, as if it's a bad thing to enjoy amateur radio! I have heard that this claim did not sit well with his audiences and that they reacted accordingly. You can see an example of what he brings to a meeting on HamRadioNow episode 403 including recorded speech excerpts: https://youtu.be/jwzYdo42oII
Far from diminishing my concern for the obstacles faced by other Amateurs, getting my tower approved and constructed served as an opportunity for me to help remove obstacles for other hams. I am proud of how I negotiated with my township's building department to develop a new procedure that can be used by anyone else in my town who seeks a permit for an antenna structure. I was able to achieve a measurable, positive result for my fellow Amateurs, and it is indicative of what I've done throughout my career and in amateur radio.
Like many of you, I fully and actively supported the original Amateur Radio Parity Act (ARPA). I asked several NJ Congressmen to co-sponsor and even contacted Senators Menendez and (at the time) Chiesa asking them to get behind the bill. However, I cannot support the compromise language that came out of the ensuing negotiations. I do not believe that getting something passed at any cost is a good strategy. My idea of a sensible compromise is exactly what has been proposed by Fred Hopengarten, Esq., K1VR, a Harvard educated antenna law attorney who quite literally wrote the book for the ARRL on antenna zoning. He writes about what a sensible ARPA bill would look like on page 5, here: https://www.kkn.net/~n6tv/Just_Say_No_to_S.1534_v4.pdf. Our director in his online town hall earlier this year essentially dismissed Fred's expertise.
On a more personal note, my friend Andrea, K2EZ has also expressed serious concern to me about this bill. She lives in a lake association in Sussex County. She has several HF and VHF antennas and fears that, should the current bill become law, she would have to give up those antennas and ask her lake association for permission – something she has never had to do before. Our incumbent told her that her antennas would be grandfathered, but the compromise bill provides for no such grandfathering. Why would anyone make such a seemingly authoritative yet completely unsupported statement?
Friends, you know what is important. You will not fall for claims that my motives are improper. If I criticize a past action of a Director, a committee or the ARRL Board as a whole, it's because I see negative consequences that could come from that action.
I want to help make good decisions with the benefit of your input.
When you receive your ballot, please vote for me, Ria Jairam, N2RJ
