Subject: [njoem] Obituary - Dr. Harry J. Shepherd
PIPERSVILLE, Pa. — Dr. Harry J. Shepherd, a longtime resident of Lambertville, most recently of Pipersville, Pa., died at his home on Thursday, Feb. 3, 2011. He was 65.
Mr. Shepherd, who had the nicknames “Shep” and “Butch,” was a son of the Harry J. Shepherd Jr. and Olive Howell Shepherd. He graduated from South Hunterdon High School in 1963 and immediately joined the Navy. He served as a corpsman and combat veteran in Vietnam from 1965 to 1966 with the Marine Corps.
Upon his discharge, he left New Jersey to attend Palmer College of Chiropractic in Davenport, Iowa. He graduated in 1971, and practiced in Mississippi for four years before returning to Lambertville in 1975. He practiced in Washington Crossing, Pa. from 1976 to 1993. As a chiropractor, he taught at the local chiropractic school and became head of the Technique Department from 1978 to 1982. He retired from chiropractic in 1993.
Harry was then employed by Hunterdon County as emergency management coordinator from 1993 to 2004. His efforts led him to be named Emergency Manager of the Year in 1999 by the Northeast States Emergency Consortium. He served as homeland security officer and veterans interment officer for Hunterdon County for four years. He was also the head of the county Haz Mat Team for three years.
He was a 25-year member of the Lambertville-New Hope Rescue Squad and a 35-year member of the Union Volunteer Fire Company in Lambertville. He was named Fireman of the Year in 1992.
He was the service officer and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post and the American Legion Toscanni Post, both in Lambertville. He was a member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows and served as New Jersey’s grand master in 1986.
His brother-in-law, James Harris, died earlier.
He is survived by his wife, Dr. Patricia Pierson Shepherd; his daughter Mandy Armitage and her husband Rick of Pipersville; his son, Dr. Toggle Shepherd and his wife Kelly of Perkasie, Pa,; his grandchildren, Evan and Tyler Armitage and Lydia, Naomi and Tobias Shepherd; his sister, Janice Harris of Lambertville; his brother, William Van Sant of Bensalem, Pa.; his sister-in laws and brothers-in-law, Janice and James Nuneviller Jr. of Lambertville, Arthur and Tami Pierson of Louisville, Ky. and Donald and Marge Pierson of Ocala, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
Services: Memorial services will be held on Saturday, Feb. 12, 11 a.m. at the Centenary United Methodist Church, 108 N. Union Street, Lambertville. Committal services following at the Holcombe-Riverview Cemetery, Delaware Township.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Van Horn-McDonough Funeral Home, 21 York St., Lambertville.
