New Licensees
We need to develop better programs to interest people in Amateur Radio and its extraordinary wealth of learning opportunities. Does your club offer classes? Do you actively help newly licensed hams?
At the end of 2017 the number of licensed hams in Massachusetts was 13,427. There were 469 new licensees, and just 140 who upgraded their licenses in 2017. We all need to work to improve those numbers.
Amateur radio growth nationwide was just 0.7% last year, and has been barely 1% for the last seven years. Last year we added 32,000 new hams but nearly 27,000 others let their licenses expire or became Silent Keys.
Key Focus
I will continue to strongly support these key policy objectives the ARRL is working on today:
Modernization of the Technician license (digital modes and some SSB on 80-40-15m).
Federal support for those wanting to install effective antennas in condominiums and neighborhoods with deed restrictions.
Pushing the FCC to take action on the increasing amount of RF interference and pollution from consumer electronic devices.
I really appreciate your strong support in the past and look forward to serving as your representative, along with Vice Director Mike Raisbeck, K1TWF, on the ARRL Board for the next term.
Please feel free to call me at 860-668-5444 or send an e-mail to k1ki at arrl.net if you have any questions!
