Subject:Volunteer today for the BAA 5K & Boston Marathon

Dear Ray,
The new year is in full swing, which means the public service season is ramping up for hams. Volunteer registration is open for the BAA 5K on Saturday, April 18, and the Boston Marathon on Monday, April 20. The BAA values the hams who help at all their races, providing crucial communications support for both race logistics and medical personnel. The deadline to sign up is Tuesday, February 10, so don’t delay!
Volunteers for both races register on the BAA Web site. If you’ve volunteered at a BAA event before, you’ll sign in with your BAA Volunteer Loyalty Number, which you can look up on the site. Otherwise, you can sign up as a new volunteer. After that, you just fill out your group and assignment request information depending on whether you want to volunteer for the Marathon, the 5K, or both races.
To volunteer at the Boston Marathon
When the BAA registration asks you about group status, do not select a group to join.
When asked for assignment preferences, select at least one Ham Radio option.
When you finish the BAA registration, you’ll get a confirmation number. Once you have that, fill out the MMRA form at http://mmra.org/marc/. This form collects additional information specific to our volunteers,
like what equipment you have.
To volunteer at the 5K only
When the BAA registration system asks about your group status, enter the following group information:
Group name: 5K hams
Group code: antennae
Then complete the rest of the registration normally, until you receive a confirmation number.
To volunteer at both races
Register as a Boston Marathon volunteer, following the instructions above.
Contact the BAA’s Volunteer Coordinator, Elisabeth Worthing, by e-mail at Worthing at baa.org. Tell her your BAA registration confirmation number, and ask to be added to the roster of ham volunteers at the 5K.
If you have any question about these events or the sign-up process, feel free to reach me by e-mail at ab1rl at brettcsmith.org or phone (859) 466 5915.
Thank you, and 73,
