Subject: Special Public Service event ALERT

For months now, the Tall Ships visit to Boston has been waffling in the
political winds - and so has any chance of ham radio support. Things now
seem to be back on track, but not as grand as the visits in 1992 and 2000.

Considering the need for advance planning for any ham activity, I have been
working with authorities on anticipatory strategies. I should point out
that if certain other (unrelated to us) plans and demands are worked out,
our assistance will be strongly requested. Obviously, no details of our
deployment are available - even though time will be extremely short if and
when such a request would be made.

At this time this is only AN ALERT - an inquiry if you could be available to
participate in our support for the event.

The Tall Ships are expected to arrive in Boston on 8 July and depart on 13
July. I can use only past experience to give you this: the first and last
days are not likely for our participation. Spectator activity would be
expected primarily during daylight.

We would use several 2 meter and 70 cm frequencies. Some assignments will
be outdoors and some (mostly?) will be indoors. Once in place, crowds
(generally, 9 to 12 July) will restrict our pedestrian movement. This
suggests portable but stationary stations. Therefore it will be preferable
(not essential) that hams have good antennas - like a J-Pole or vertical
dipole, in addition to the usual batteries and other necessities.

Although I do not know how, where, when, or if we will be needed, the need
for advance planning is clearly important. If we are called upon to support
this event, I would like to know your possible availability. Please reply
to me your interest in this exciting event and if you could assist for any
or all of the half days of the event. When further details are known I will
keep you informed. If you have any questions at any time, don't hesitate to
contact me.

At this time, this is only an ALERT. Specific recruiting will be made
appropriately - if our support is requested.
