[W1SMH] Computer Problem HELP!!!

    I'm having a problem with my computer and need some advice or suggestions; if there is some one with the knowledge and some time to pay me a visit, that would be better.
    I'm using windows XP Professional.
    The two problems are:
    It is taking around 8 to 10 minutes to start up and once in a while the keyboard and mouse lock up and the only way to get it going again is to restart,  witch takes another 8 minutes.
    About 2 minutes after turning it on the screen looks all set and ready to go but the computer keeps cranking for another 6 minutes without telling me what it is doing and then, while I'm in the middle of some thing it some times locks up.
    I deleted some cookies but I'm not sure if I cleaned them all.
    Any help would be appreciated.
