Hi Folks,

This nice Field Day SAFETY primer was posted on eHam.net... I thought it
was a good reminder to send out to the group. Thanks to Jim Walroth -
N3AWS for the Primer...

Field Day Safety Primer - by Jim N3AWS

Field Day 2002 is rapidly approaching and thousands of hams and
potential future hams will take to the wide open spaces as they do each
year. Some think of it as a contest; to others it is an emergency
preparedness exercise. Regardless of how you view Field Day take a
minute to review some safety precautions.

1. ELECTRICITY KILLS! Beware of power lines when erecting antennas.
Also, disconnect antennas and take proper shelter if lightning
threatens.

2. USE EYE PROTECTION. Take a pair of safety glasses for assembling
antennas. You have one pair of eyes - take care of them.

3. WEAR A HARD HAT IF NECESSARY. Beams and towers are great gain
antennas. Wear a hard hat if you are helping erect them. A dropped tool
could scramble your brains.

4. ALCOHOL AND GENERATORS OR TOWER WORK OR DRIVING - DONT MIX. Save
the brews for relaxing after the hard work is done. Alcohol doesn't mix
with mechanical work. Also, alcohol can dehydrate you if the weather is
hot. The run of thumb in the Air Force is a quart of water per hour if
the temperature is hot.

5. If your health is poor, don't over do it in the heat. DRINK PLENTY OF
FLUIDS. Wear sun screen if you'll be in the sun. Also wear a hat.

6. TAKE ALONG SOME GOOD BUG REPELLENT. West Nile Virus recently came to
Florida which is carried by mosquitoes. Even if they aren't carrying
disease, take some repellent along. The mosquito coils work well - I
first saw them in the Caribbean in the early 80s and can attest to
their effectiveness.

7. Wear seat belts to and from Field Day (and all other times). Over
half of our trauma center patients would never have been there if they
had heeded this simple advice.

8. HAVE FUN, BUT BE SAFE.
