Subject: [W1SMH] New software, New List address....Important
Message-ID: <5.1.0.14.2.20020108115611.009fe2b0@pop.nethawk.com>
List Members,
As you know, all email lists at QTH.NET are currently being run on a
program called Majordomo. Since this program was written there have been
many changes in list management software. We had hoped that Majordomo
would update as time went by, but sadly it hasn't (even though the authors
said they would). To that end QTH.NET will be changing some of the lists
to a more user-friendly package called Mailman. This list is one of those
that will be changing.
Mailman allows you to manage your subscriptions on the web. You can
subscribe, unsubscribe, put your subscription on hold, change from normal
to digest mode and much more. You can still manage your subscription via
email, but the GUI is much easier. If you would like to have a look at the
user guide (a work in progress), go to:
http://www.imsa.edu/~ckolar/mailman/mailman-userguide-0.1.pdf
You will need Acrobat Reader to view this file.
What do you have to do when we change? Pretty much nothing! When the list
is moved, you will receive a welcome message from Mailman. You should save
this as it contains the address you are subscribed under as well as a
password (which you can change). You'll need the password to make any
changes in your subscriptions. You will also receive the new list posting
address along with links to the list info page, subscription management
page and more.
While I don't expect any problems with the transfer, please be patient if
problems do arise and be confident that we will be working to solve them as
quickly as possible.

Message-ID: <000001c1a550$cae86880$9865fea9@clayton>
Members of the W1SMH mailing list,
Recently QTH.net/QSL.net, who hosts 1000's of Amateur Radio-related
mailing lists, changed their mailing list software from a package called
MAJORDOMO to MAILMAN.
If you find any problems with this software that need to be addressed,
please contact me IMMEDIATELY so that we can seek resolution. I do not
want the conversion to keep people from using this resource.
The same old rules apply to this mailing list server as the previous:
1. Make sure all messages are in plain-text format (NO RICHTEXT or HTML)
2. Do not send attachments to the mailing list server.
3. Enjoy!!!
Send your messages to w1smh@mailman.qth.net
-->> NOTE: Now "mailman" is required. <<--
Thank you & 73,

Subject: [W1SMH] Yaesu FT-817 discussion heating up on QRZ.com
Message-ID: <000001c1a915$162845f0$6501a8c0@clayton>
If you've thought about getting a Yaesu FT-817, you might consider some
of the comments from this web page:
http://www.qrz.com/article.pl?sid=02/01/28/0847250&mode=thread&threshold
=-1
The article is about a ham who claims the radio and all its accessories
might be an overkill for someone wanting "just QRP" or portable
operations. Many other hams respond by saying how portable it is and
how great is the battery life. Some point out the radio's "dirty" RF
output characteristics while others retort by the old saying "you get
what you pay for, it's a low-cost do-all rig."
My opinion is every radio isn't for everybody. If I wanted to
experiment with portable, low power operations I would probably use my
FT-100, a gel cell, and a wire.
Enjoy the article.

I believe you know about Real Radio! I am very disappointed to learn that
you haven't been bringing a collins R390, &the accompanying transmitter!
I don't operate the Real bands any more, but, wahat I remember is that a
whole bunch of folks were trying to penetrate the LOW POWER market back
then. I believe their name was, Argonott, or the manufacturers thereof.
