Message follows:
As I hope you have read by now, Amateur Radio emergency communications
training supported by a $181,900 federal homeland security grant will
begin within a few weeks instead of next year as reported initially.
During its first year, the grant from the Corporation for National and
Community Service
(CNCS) special volunteer program will reimburse the cost of Level I ARRL
Amateur Radio Emergency Communications Course training for up to 1700
volunteers.
This week, ARRL section managers were asked to recommend up to five
students to sign up to take the Level I Amateur Radio Emergency
Communications (AREC) on-line course starting in September. These
individuals also will receive additional training to become instructors
and mentors for future classes.
To that end, if you are an ARRL member who has **not** taken the Level I
AREC course, and you feel you would like to become a instructor and
mentor for the course, please submit your name to me ASAP. Mentors
typically communicate with students via e-mail, reviewing required
assignments and answering questions as they work through the course, and
I believe some classroom offerings of the course are also planned. With
the experience you already have in emergency communications and the
training the ARRL will provide, I'm sure that those of you with the
motivation and time to help in this important training effort can do
well at it. You can find general information about ARRL Continuing
Education Courses at http://www.arrl.org/cce/ and the syllabus for the
Level I AREC course at http://www.arrl.org/cce/syllabus.html#econe .
For those of you who are ARRL members who **have** completed the Level I
AREC course, if you would like to be a mentor and instructor for the
course, please contact Dan Miller <[email protected]> for information on
how to take part.
Best 73,
Phil Temples, K9HI
ARRL Section Manager,
Eastern Massachusetts Section
