They are called "bristo" in the military manuals of the time.
They are called "Bristol" by the manufacturers and many suppliers now.

Take your pick.

( I believe the company that holds the trademark on the tool is at:
<http://www.bristol-tool.co.uk/USindex.html>, although I cannot locate on
their website any info about the spline wrenches.)

Additional links from the web of interest follow. The first one included
drawings, dimensions of many "Bristol" spline keys:

<http://www.newmantools.com/hand/splinekey.htm>
<http://www.mgs4u.com/L-keys.htm>
<http://sd.znet.com/~wa6fec/tools.htm>
The URL above is specifically dedicated to our boat anchors and includes
photos of bristo and Btristol spline wrenches originally supplied with the
radios, which tools most of us have never seen!!

This last site appears to be a NASA site listing tools and such with NSN
numbers and nomenclature. One kit includes: "BRISTOL MULTIPLE-SPLINE
SCREW-DRIVERS".

Happy surfing.
