Do not build a power supply permanently into the
radio! It definitely does take away from the value.
You can either sit a power supply that isn't
permanently connected in place of the batteries if
they were indeed contained in the set (most were not -
the batteries sat outside of the radio), or you can
hook wires from the appropriate terminals to an
external power supply. That is fine. If you want to
"show off" that the set does indeed work, this works
fine. Also, you can use the same power supply on
several sets.
I have over 50 restored battery sets in my collection
(along with AC powered sets making a total of over
100) and definitely do not keep any power supplies
hooked up.

My question is does it take away from the value of the
radio to have a supply built into to show it really works?
