[Vintage-Radio] Shiny Chassis

Could some of the experts on this list please give suggestions to this "novice radio restoration enthusiast" on how to really clean up the old chassis?  I've seen pictures of radios that look absolutely pristine and I'm wondering how that is accomplished.  Must I remove everything in the radio to do it, or can I do the job with much of the circuitry intact?  Any help would be appreciated.
