Hey Bob,
Yes they do sound the same with or without a grill. They even sound the same
with the original blue foam grill, formed of one inch cubed foam pieces
glued on to some heavy cloth that covered the entire grill area, and when
new form this pleasing gentle mind mood pattern. However amigo Bob, when the
foam chunks started falling on my head as the Century L-100's reached age
twelve, this resonant rain of rotting foam not only ruined a romantic mood,
it went down your shirt and itched like ten thousand Mosquitoes had used
your back for needle nose hose practice! But the real issue comes into play
when the foam has finally finished flaking off and the front of the
fantastic speakers enclosed in a gorgeous cabinet with a grill area that
looks roughly like the surface of the Moon in a crater rich area! Yes, I
know Bob, but they still sound good.
What troubles me though, are the sighted folks who wander in, are stunned by
the absolutely awesome sound that fills the air space and then get a look at
these formerly foam fronts that flaked off leaving an image of Moon craters
turned into space sand fills with a truly international flavor imparted by
the mostly American and Russian parts pit!
Since throwing some decorative western Horse blankets over the areas of ugly
muffled the midrange, I have decided to be wasteful and replace the foam
that flaked.
