Seriously as Duane knows I'm as big a fan of JD Sumner as he is, 
although nowhere near as well versed, and a real "JD-come-lately", since 
back when he was recording tunes like "Way Down" with Elvis I wouldn't 
have been caught dead listening to any music where you could actually 
understand the lyrics.. My how our tastes change over time!

I used to work with another JD fan who told me about the Branson male 
quartet "Pierce Arrow" that featured Dan Britton, who was in the 
Guinness Book of World Records for nearly 20 years as the world's lowest 
bass singer. But there will never be another quite like JD Sumner. It's 
one thing to hit a low note, but JD could actually sing "down there" and 
if you have never heard one of his spoken word recordings, you've missed 
a treat.

A liocal radio station features an hour-long Southern Gospel program I 
had never really listened to Southern Gospel music before but have 
become hooked, there are some really great singers, and occasionally - 
JD Sumner will come on just to test my speakers. This program is hosted 
by Elmer Childress, who played piano with the Stamps Quartet back in the 
late 40's or early 50's - a short time before JD Sumner took over the 
Stamps from the Blackwoods in 1954 and turned it into the more 
professional gospel quartet ever. Elmer has been doing gospel music for 
over 50 years and you learn a little history, like the fact that V.O. 
Stamps established the V.O. Stamps Music Company in Jacksonville, TX way 
back in 1924, and also a "Stamps Music School" which wasn’t actually a 
building but was a clinic taken to various towns to demonstrate the 
shape note system.

But that's a whole 'nuther topic...anyhow if you like gospel you can

at 7am central.
