I am not familiar with this piece of equipment, but I'll try a guess.

The higher end machines had separate play and record heads,
so if you were doing multiple track work, that is, using a track
already recorded and wanted to add an additional audio track,
you set up the machine to use the record head as the playback
head for the track already recorded.  If you used the normal
play back head, the newly recorded track would not be in
time synch with the older track, because of the physical
separation of the play and record heads.

This is assuming you wanted the two (or more tracks) to
remain as distinct tracks.  Obviously, if you are mixing
the old track material with new material to a new track,
then you don't use the synch mode.

Only a guess, tho.
