Thanks for the explanation.. I never worked on equipment with that system..
It makes sense. In the film sound editing business, they mixed sound from
some tracks onto others.. or onto other tape/film altogether. The recorders
did have controlled ramp-up and ramp-down of bias to allow for smooth
pickup of recording..and you could record over a previously recorded track
without a click or thump.
