Air suspension (also called acoustic suspension) is the type of speaker
that has a tightly sealed cabinet and the drivers work against the air
pressure, requiring more power but providing better bass control. These
are in contrast to ported or vented systems. Some Celestion and KEF
designs are air suspension, as is the famous LS3/5a monitor. So yeah,
it's more than just hype, and they are worth checking out.
