This site has about all the details on the glass bonded ferrite heads.  I
remember them in the era of the 70s in the Roberts and Akai machines.  The
Cross Field Head Akais were the hot thing for quite a while for military
folks to buy at the PX, and Akai became a well known name in consumer
electronics because of that.  Roberts, the same thing with different
badging, was more expensive and eventually was overcome by the influx of
products from Japan and Europe.
