Duane: Sure sounds like it is a 2 track machine. One last test is to play
back a stereo program recorded on a 4 track machine in one direction only
(start with blank tape) and see if it plays OK, in stereo, on the Revox
(slightly lower volume, degraded s/n ratio is expected). I am guessing there
were 4 track heads made for the Revox if you wanted to convert. Most just
changed the playback heads to they could listen to 4 track tapes.--Mike,

Subject: [Vintage-Audio] Re Revox Mystery

I have come to the conclusion that this Revox B77 is not a four track stereo
deck as I was told when I purchased it. Rather, it is a two track stereo
deck.
Which is ok, it does have better noise suppression for near studio
performance.
I doubt it is of much benefit for a typical consumer though.

Question: Is there any way to know for sure that this is a two track
machine, as
in markings etc? How did Revox designate a two track and a four track deck?

I based my conclusion on a tape I recorded on both sides in stereo on a
different deck. When played on the Revox I could hear one track playing
right
and another playing backwards. I am told this indicates it is a two track
machine. Based on all of what has happened, it certainly makes sense that it
is
one.
