[Vintage-Audio] Re Acoustical Research Speakers

as far as procuring AR speakers of that certain vintage, they are on =
ebay all of the time. Of course ebay can be a crap shoot. I can confirm =
what ken said, my old pair of 3AXes (granted, bought used in a junk =
shop) required frequent repair, but it was worth it. Never could run =
them very well on tube amps but really made the old japanese amps =
sparkle. In the end they were too heavy and high maintenance for my =
needs (at a particularly mobile point in my life) but now that I am more =
settled I wish I had them back.=20
Also, Duane, I was about the defend the younger generation, but realized =
with a start that I am pushing forty myself, being 38- and I don't know =
anyone younger than myself who is seriously interested in accurate =
musical reproduction- but I can't imagine the possibility that there is =
no young person interested in it. There are high end systems, like B&O, =
that clearly tailor themselves for a youthful, affluent market, but =
we're talking late twenties or older urban professionals, if i had to =
hazard a guess. But sadly they are clearly in the minority; most audio =
equipment money, judging by the catalogs, is spent on six-speaker =
minimum mid-fi home theatre setups and thumpin car stereos.=20

Hi Duane,
Yes! We used to do final mixes at Motown on AR-3's....also Altec
604E's..for the rompin',stompin feel good "playback!! The AR-3's were
the flattest speaker with virtually no false resonances and very nice,
wide dispersion mid range and tweeters...one big snag ...they did not
handle POWER!
The woofer did, but the mid range would lose its connection (broken =
wire)
by way of excursion fatigue.
Otherwise a wonderful sounding system that sounded closest to "live"
sound...
