W9RAN de K8TFD,
Yeah, we used to mix from 8 track 1" tape via a home brew, "Mike Maclean"
"Dilly"amped, solid state
mixing console that sounded really great to Studer stereo and mono tape
machines...Lawrence Horn
the guy who hired me, was the "chief" mixer for the company and is
credited with the development of the
"Motown Sound" that at that time(1967)was made a monster in the market by
the team of Holland-Dozier-Holland....I started there in 1967as a
"technician" repairing stereo equipment for the many departments(A&R)et
al, then in 1968, I graduated to "Mixer-session engineer" doing "rhythm
sessions called(stage one) then string and horn sessions and
vocal/instrument sessions (stage two), and then final stereo mixing and
mono mixing(stage three) of the many artists on the various labels... It
was a heady time for me, hearing tunes on the radio that I had just
worked on two weeks before!!.We used exclusively Neumann U-67 tube mikes
before the "Studio -A Rebuild", then we got to use KM-84/KM-85 and other
solid state mikes...the tube mikes had the best "sonority,"crisp and
clean with the best high frequency transient response...The"My Cherie
Amour" album is an example of my work.......try www.soulfuldetroit.com it
is interesting.

Ken Sands
