[Vintage-Audio] AR-4 Puzzle

Good idea Pete. Thank you.

I usually use a 1.5 vdc battery across the terminals to determine phase
polarity. However this requires one to be able to see, or feel, the cone of the
speaker. If it moves in, reverse the polarity so that it moves outward. But
there is no apparent way into these AR-4's! I really do not want to waste some
of my Black Cat firecrackers on this project!

Hope to hear you on the Net Sunday Pete -

Actually it doesn't make a difference as long as both speakers internally
are wired the same to the terminals. Remember you not running DC voltage
to the speakers. Here's a way to test to see if both terminals of each
speaker are wired the same internally to the enclosure. Connect the top
terminal of one speaker to the left channel, positive marked,
amplifier/receiver speaker terminal; connect the top terminal of the
other speaker to the right channel, positive marked, amplifier/receiver
terminal. Connect the unused terminal of each speaker to each other. Run
some audio through the amplifier/receiver so that's it's audible in the
speakers. Put the amplifier/receiver in the monaural position and adjust
the balance control to roughly mid-center. If the speakers are wired the
same ( top terminal of left is the same as top terminal of right ) then
you should find a spot, when adjusting the balance control, where the
audible sound of both speakers is minimal or very low. Mark the top
terminals with a plus, a red dot, a happy face, etc. If the speaker
terminals of both speakers are not wired the same, rotating the balance
control will not provide very low audio. i.e. they will be out of phase.
Pete
