Fred, I, too, am glad you replied to the list- it's making for some =
lively conversation! I am inclined to agree with both Fred AND Bob.

On most amps (see below for clarification), I find the source/tape =
function works exactly as Fred described *if* using a three-head deck =
with its own source/tape switch, and the switch is in the "tape" =
position. of course, with such a provision, one could simply switch to =
monitor the tape on the amp and switch back and forth between source and =
tape to your heart's content on the deck, which is what i usually do.

However... I have observed the tape input on various vintage amps to =
behave differently. Both source and tape seem pretty much to be =
line-level on some, and others do appear to have a very low-level =
(sometimes, but not always, called "tape head") input designed for the =
separate units described by Bob. My Eico integrated is like that, as is =
my Dynaco preamp.

Sheesh! Now this is why I hate getting bitten by the afore-cussed=20
"Reply-To" function. "No good deed goes unpunished."

First, what did I write that was wrong? Maybe I'm sleepy but I can't=20
find with what you're disagreeing. I concur with what you've said about =

transports and preamps but it doesn't disagree with what I said.

Second; sorry, but no way does that Scott's tape loop input have enough=20
gain to handle a raw head output. It is intended for a tape line =
source.
