Yep, I drew the same conclusions over the years. Although I only heard one pair
and that was twenty years ago. Most I heard from had little good to say about
them. Certainly not up to the standards of the commercial line. I used the Bose
401 and 802 on stage and they were spectactular.

The Bose 901's were crap in their day, and have not improved with age! Power
hungry, and, because of the extreme EQ required, heavy in harmonic and IM
distortion. It IS possible to use these with a generic EQ, but this would be
very tricky due to the problem of having to determine, and mimic, the
original EQ curves. Best relegated to firewood.
