While I am biding my time, and not patiently, searching for a pair of vintage
speakers to compliment my H. H. Scott LT-110 FM multiplex tuner and LK-72B
integrated stereo amplifier, I connected it up to a new pair of Paradigm Monitor
9 speakers. Wow! I could not believe the incredible fidelity and acoustic
dynamics that filled the room.
I was going to bi-wire the speakers to increase the highs, but this pure
Titanium dome tweeter does not need any help. The audio is crisp, crystal clear
and true.
It crosses over at 2 Khz and 400 Hz and uses part of the eight inch mid range to
extend the bass response of the eight inch woofer.
It requires fifteen watts RMS to drive each speaker and the LK-72B delivers 36.
Nonetheless, I have the volume only one fourth open and the room is filled with
sound, plenty of sound. I have owned, and heard, other Paradigm speakers and
always considered them as mid way between good and very good. However, the
Monitor 9 series is vastly superior to the 9S series of several years ago. These
are without any doubt the best I have heard by Paradigm.
I compared the LK-72B with a Yamaha receiver that powers my surround sound
system. I tried the Paradigm Monitor 9 speakers on both amplifiers with the same
music. The H. Scott had a depth and warmth not present in the Yamaha. While the
Yamaha sounds very nice, the H. Scott from 1963 brings the music to life.
Difficult to explain, but it is easy to hear.
If you get a chance to hear the Paradigm Monitor 9 speakers, do so. they sell
for $850 a pair and weigh 53 pounds each. I was impressed, and that is saying
something! this old audio file is not easily impressed by anyone's anything
anymore.
The LK-72B rocks on -
