I have figured out that the Scotch number 227 reel to reel audio tape is close
to their top of the line commercial grade. The iron oxide used is either black
or a dark gray. It is a special mixture that allows for higher recording levels
than the standard iron oxide which is a reddish brown. Superior spectrum spread
requires a superior oxide and it is heavier than the normal one. This accounts
for the difference in weight.
The military did not have Scotch manufacture a special audio tape exclusively
for them, but purchased their best commercial grade tape.
I can tell you for certain, that the recording quality is the best I have heard
at 3 3/4 ips and outstanding at 7 1/2 ips. Very low noise and almost no
distortion. If you have an opportunity to purchase this tape, you would be well
advised to stock up!
