[Vintage-Audio] Conversion Of Vinyl

Many manufacturers in the '50s era made products with a few EQ curves
besides the new RIAA, but IMHO, the best of them was the McIntosh C-4 / 8.
As someone noted, these require external power. McIntosh DID make a small
power supply intended for stand-alone use of the C-8, but they are very
rare. In nearly 40 years of dealing with such, I have only seen one. This
is a simple supply, however, and anyone with home-brew talents could whip
one up in an evening. Consider building one with DC for the heaters.
If one is truly serious about this aspect of the audio hobby, I would
recommend obtaining one of these units, and completely re-capping it. The
various EQ settings rely on filter networks that have capacitors, mostly
out-of-spec today. If you really want to obsess over that, select capacitors
with the assistance of an accurate capacitance bridge, and I don't mean one
made by Heathkit, or similar junk. Go for a General Radio. Select capacitors
that fall within 5% or so of the nominal values, and rest assured that your
EQ curves will be pretty much as the design engineers intended.
