[Vintage-Audio] Re Teac External Dolby Unit

Yes, they are nicely made, as were all Teac products of this vintage ( many
consider the '70s to have been the "Golden Decade" of Japanese audio ). As
one other lister correctly pointed out, they bring around $50 in excellent
condition. Not sure about the "monitor" switch. I owned one of these many
moons ago, and do not have a manual in my files. I can tell you, though,
that this unit consists of two channels of Dolby processing. You can assign
both channels to the record channels of the deck, or the playback channels
( for stereo ) but not both at the same time. Alternately, you can assign
one to record, and one to simultaneous playback for mono recording. The hot
set up for 4 channel consists of a Teac 3440-S with either four AN-180s or
two AN-300s. This will allow simultaneous monitoring of all four inputs and
outputs at the same time.
With regards to the level tape, this is a standard type of cal tape, not
specific to Teac or any other maker. Consists of a 400HZ tone recorded at a
saturation level of (X ??) nanowebers per meter of flux density. You may
still be able to obtain one from companies that make such . Try Standard
Tape Lab. Be prepared for high cost though. All of the Teac and Advent Dolby
units came with these. Ask around and you may be able to borrow one. Once
you have set your levels, you can mark their positions on the panel for
re-setting if necessary. If you intend serious reel to reel use, consider
obtaining a second AN-180, pay the going cost, and make sure that the one
you buy still has it's cal tapes with it. Seems to me that there were two.
The second one was a cassette.
