The B-77 was a later version of the A-77 which was a legendary deck mainly
used by radio stations and post-production studios in the '70s. They are all
1/4 inch format, will handle any reel size up to 10 1/2 inch NAB, and could
be set up with various track / head configurations -- most commonly 1/4
track and 1/2 track stereo. The very last A-77s came with built in Dolby "B"
noise reduction. These were excellent machines. Many would argue that they
were the best 1/4 tape machine ever built.
Unfortunately, however, the days of analog reel to reel tape are mostly
past. Although there continues to be a small demand for these machines among
folks who use them as mixdown decks from analog multitrack formats, there
are vast numbers out there, and they don't fetch many $$$.
Parts, which can still be had from Studer / Revox, are outrageously
expensive. Recently, I purchased a service manual and a pair of NAB hub
adapters for one of my machines, and it cost me $100.
In the past 3 years, I have bought 3 A-77 machines, all in working
condition. The best was a 1/4 track, Dolby equipped, unit in it's original
box with all the papers etc. Paid $50 for that one. Last year I bought 2
units set up for 1/2 track stereo. Paid $25 for the pair. Less than pristine
cosmetic condition, but they worked.
