Duane--I got it wrong-sorry. The LK-48 is the equiv of the 222-C. The LK-72
is the equiv. of the 299-D, one of Scotts best of that era. Puts out about
30 / 30 watts RMS. They never made an integrated amp with more steam.
Having said that, however, there are some major pitfalls that you need to
become aware of if you intend to go down that road.
In general, all of the integrated amps that Scott made during the "stereo
era" can be basically divided into two categories, based on the output tubes
used. ALL of the 222 series used 7189 / 6BQ5 / EL-84 output tubes. The early
299 series used these also, but the last ( and best ) used the 7591-A. This
( rather short-lived ) tube has no equivalent in the tube register, and has
not been made in the USA since the early 1970s. One can occasionally find
NOS examples, but they tend to be pricey, at least $50 each, and for the
LK-72, one must have matched pairs ( almost non-existent ). The
Russians have recently begun the re-manufacture of this type, but the major
failing here is their use of a much larger bottle than the originals. I
haven't had occasion to use any of these yet, and I can't speak as to their
quality. I suspect, however, that they will not physically fit in a LK-72,
due to the close spacing on the sockets. I haven't actually tried, however,
so I could be wrong here. There are some options, but they are all costly.
One is to remove the octal sockets, replace them with 10 pin "Compactron"
sockets, and use the type 7868 tube, which is electrically identical.
Another ( my favorite) is to rewire the sockets, and use type 5881 tubes.
These are a compact, rugged, mil-spec version of a 6L6. They will (barely)
fit into the space, and are a longer lasting tube than the 7591-A.
Other considerations include ( as one other poster mentioned ) the main
power supply electrolytics, which are mulii-section, and not at all "off the
shelf" units. If these are bad, the only option is to rebuild the originals
with new innards, which is both time consuming and costly.
As a hobby project, this is worth doing. If you have to shell out $$$
however, think carefully.
