No, this is not off topic. Right on, in fact. A nice description of how you did
this might prove very helpful to others with a similar need.

I do not know who provides the kit, but there is one that allows you to recone
the Altec Lansing speakers. I know several who have used it with good results.
If you are able to do this yourself, it is much less costly than having the
speakers professionally reconed.

If any of you are interested, I can find out who the source is for the Altec
Lansing kits.

I don't know if this is OT or not... but thought I'd mention that I am
in the process of 'reconing' (it really should be called: "refoaming")
my AR-91 speakers. Old speakers with foam surrounds (it's a circle of
foam that connects the main cone to the edge in the largest speaker
[woofer/etc] in a so-called "bookshelf" speaker) have them 'rot' (that's
what they call it-the foamed plastic stuff literally disintegrates) and
hence fail. I let mine sit for several years after they did this, and
finally got my courage up and bought a replacement kit (~$30 for the
pair.)

You can do a search on "speaker reconing" or, I dealt with:
<http://www.simplyspeakers.com/2doityourself.htm>. Their phone serrvice
and subsequent kit was very satisfactory. A small generic pamphlet on
how to do it, the 2 foam surrounds specifically for my speakers, and
more than enough glue for the job. Commercial estimates on this job
seemed to be over $100 each plus shipping.

Wow. It's not that hard to do, and works like a million. I just wanted
to put this out for others who may have thought they had to junk a
perfectly good-otherwise-set of expensive speakers.
